10 Best Apps to Install On Your New Windows 10 PC

Got a new Windows 10 PC? Can’t decide which apps to install to get started? There are tons of Windows apps on the Windows Store, and there is no limit to it outside. However,  if you want the best apps to power start your new Windows 10 PC, here I have listed the best apps to get you started.

Windows 10 comes with a bunch of apps pre-installed. You get a paint app, note-taking app OneNote, personal voice assistant Cortana and many more. We will be looking at some of the apps that are better than the apps offered by Microsoft and of course apps that are missing by default.

1. Web Browser – Google Chrome / Firefox

Windows 10 comes with Microsoft Edge as the default web browser. While the web browser is decent, it is yet to catch up with a more popular browser like Chrome and Firefox. I personally use Google Chrome for its speed and but others may prefer Mozilla Firefox.

Mozilla Firefox comes with a better download manager than Google Chrome whereas Google Chrome has better extension/plugin support than Firefox.

2. Security – Panda Free Antivirus

I don’t have any Antivirus installed on my PC mostly because I am usually aware of what I install on my PC and also, of course, I couldn’t shake off the notion that antivirus does slow down your PC. However, don’t be an overconfident chap like me and install a free antivirus. Windows 10 comes with free Windows Defender security tool, but if you don’t feel safe enough with it, I suggest Panda antivirus.

Panda free antivirus is recommended because it does most of the work from the cloud without eating up your PC resources unnecessarily. It is also free to install, so that’s a plus point too.

It comes with antivirus protection, USB protection to detect any harmful files and codes in the USB before being able to open it on your PC, recovery system and gaming mode for undisturbed gaming sessions.

3. LastPass Password Manager

People who work on PC tend to store most of their online account details on PC using Notepad or a note taking app. This can be a security threat if your PC is infected with a malware.

LastPass is a password manager tool that allows you to manage all of your passwords and other account details at one place. LastPass securely stores your password in its server, and even LastPass employees cannot access the encrypted passwords.

Apart from managing password, LastPass can also help you generate a strong password when needed, store digital records like insurance cars, WiFi-password, membership details and more.

LastPass is available as Chrome extension as well as Windows application. I would recommend you to download the Windows Application as you will be storing more than just website password and login details in LastPass.

4. Cloud Storage – Dropbox / Google Drive

With access to affordable and faster internet, we now store some of our all the important files in the cloud. Dropbox is one of the best cloud storage services you can find, and the Dropbox client is available for Windows PC.

The app offers cross-platform sync, file sharing and collaboration feature to the users. It only comes with 2 GB of storage, so that is something you should consider.

If you want something with more storage, then consider Google Drive app for Windows. Google Drive comes with 15 GB of storage, to begin with, and you can further add more storage for as low as $2 month.

Both Google Drive and Dropbox sync any and all the documents across all the device so that you can access them on the go from anywhere anytime.

If you don’t want to install a third-party application, then Windows 10 by default comes with OneDrive, Microsoft’s own cloud storage service and it comes with 5 GB of free storage.

5. Microsoft Office Alternative – LibreOffice

Microsoft Office 365 or Office 2016 is the best Office Suite available as of now hands down, but it is not free. If you are someone who doesn’t want to subscribe and pay for the Microsoft Office suite, try LibreOffice.

Also, before you try LibreOffice, check if your new Windows 10 PC comes with Microsoft Office bundled for free. If that is the case, you don’t need any other office suite.

If not, OfficeLibre offers alternative Microsoft Office tools like Word, PowerPoint, Excel and more. It may take some time to get used to the working of OfficeLibre, but once you do, you may not miss Microsoft Office anymore.

6. Image Editor – Photoshop Express / Paint.Net

Windows 10 comes with the latest Microsoft Paint 3D app and not the old MS Paint app. However, if you want something more sophisticated but lesser than Photoshop, try Photoshop Express.

Photoshop Express is free to download and comes with necessary editing tools for normal users. You can crop images, editing, add effects, adjust filters and add borders, etc.

If Photoshop Express didn’t catch your fancy, try Paint.Net. Paint.Net looks and works similar to Paint 3D but offers more features. You can read more about Paint.net and other image editors in our MS paint alternative guide.

Paint.net is a free image editing app, but if you want to support the developer then download it from the Windows Store here for $2.99 which is well worth the money. If you want more photo editing options, read our best MS Paint alternatives for Windows 10 guide.

Windows 10 comes with an inbuilt file extractor, but if you want a more sophisticated tool, WinRAR and PeaZip are good alternatives.
